[수리][모아] 하스트수리 모아 Haast Eagle and Moa

New Zealand’s forests were once home to giant species of bird, including the world’s largest eagle. Haast’s eagle boasted a wingspan of up to 3-metres & sharp talons that could fell 2-metre-tall, 200kg moa. Earlier this year, we recreated hunter versus prey in life-sized sculpture.

This beautiful piece of art was created through collaboration between Weta's sculpting, 3D, and manufacturing crews. This was one of the first jobs I had the pleasure to work on at Weta, I spent months sculpting the Moa and prepping the sculpture for print. I worked under the direction and guidance of Sculptor Daniel Cockersell and worked with other 3D artists (Ryan Serrano and James Doyle) to produce a digital model of the sculpt. The birds were then 3D printed in wax and cast in bronze. The workshop crew assembled the giant structure around a steel armature before hand-tooling and finishing the surface.

Last year, I was privileged to contribute a small part on this beautiful project. Along with my friend/co-worker Tarn Greenlaw, I helped in 3d sculpting the Moa (particularly the legs) under the supervision of Dan Cockersell and James Doyle. smiley The whole thing was digitally sculpted, then they got 3D printed in wax and cast in bronze. After that, the amazing workshop crew assembled the giant structure around a steel armature before refining and finishing the surface.

Well, Chromacon was a blast! Met a ton of cool people and saw a bunch of rad art! Here is my finished painting "Pouakai" that I unveiled at the festival. The Pouakai was a monstrous bird of Maori legend that ate people. This creature is commonly identified as the extinct Haast's eagle, the massive raptor that once hunted giant Moa in the South Island of New Zealand.

Here are some quick ZBrush renders of the Haast Eagle, so you can see some of the details. The project was for a private commission which was sculpted at Weta Workshop. The end result was a large bronze sculpture of a Haast Eagle attacking a Giant Moa. Tarn Greenlaw and Ryan Serrano worked together to sculpt the Giant Moa.
