Anatomy tip of the day. The outside or lateral portion of the lower leg proves to be one of those areas that are problematic for artists. The best way to start commiting the muscles of that region to memory is to memorize the muscle in the middle first. Here's the best way to go about it: Draw a centerline down the lower leg from this outside point of view, and Fibularis Longus (Peroneus Longus) centers right on top of that center line. Once you remember to start here when drawing or sculpting the muscles of the lower leg all the other muscles in front of and behind of Fibularis Longus are much easier to create and to recognize as viewed on life model. I hope this helps!
Anatomy tip of the day. Oh the back, where to even start with this mess of ever changing forms and shapes? This is by far the most common head scratcher for students and seasoned professionals alike that I've seen over the years. So where do you start? The answer is simple and seemingly unsatisfactory to many but have patience and master this first or there is no sense in moving forward because you'll always be confused if you can't find and remember this one thing...the spine of the scapula. Yep that line where the trapezius and rear head of the deltoid meet. So try this as an exercise. Look at images of models male and female, body builder to regular fitness, thin and fat, and try to find that landmark. Once you get fast at finding it all the other muscles in the shoulder girdle will fall into place.
Anatomy tip of the day. Here's a close-up of the pectoralis major. What is really obvious is that the arm is down on the left picture and the arm is up on the right picture. But may not be so obvious is that the humerus (or the upper arm bone) is rotated upward 90°. This changes the characteristic of the insertion point of the pectoralis major and thus una twists the muscle fibers giving that extra fullness right in front of the armpit.
This one-of-a-kind reference contains heroic proportions based on a scan of a real model. With the contemporary artist in mind the reference was adjusted to meet the need for a more ideal canon of measurement.
After years in the making, hundreds of hours of cadaver and live model study, the world's most accurate anatomy figure is finally here. This écorché figure is the result of over a decade of anatomical knowledge gained from teaching and working with models and also cadavers. I have spent so much time bypassing all the incorrect anatomy information out there and am excited to get this in your hands and put your anatomical knowledge on the fast track!
