Deep in the forest of Fangorn a gnarled, old, green shepherd dozed among the gently rustling trees of his herd. Finglas, or Leaflock as he was named in the common tongue, was one of the most ancient of the Ents; time-weathered giants who watched over the wild woods that once covered much of Middle-earth.

By the waning years of the Third Age those great forests of ages past had shrunk to but small and patchy remnants, and among the peoples of the world the Shepherds of the Trees were spoken of as myth. Indeed, few remained, and those who did, spent more time sleeping than awake, barely discernible from the trees in their care.

Leaflock was one such, but only the foolish would mistake his gentle slumber for timidity, or the frailty of age, for when roused to heat in defence of his flock an Ent could unleash a wrath that shook the ground and shattered stone.

So would Saruman learn, when in his pride he burned the woods of Fangorn. Called to action, the Ents would march upon his fortress of Isengard, and neither stone, nor fire; neither arrow nor axe; would turn aside their terrible advance when the Ents marched to war.

FEATURES:

- Made from high-quality polystone

- Depicts one of the last remaining Ents during the siege of Isengard

- Contains two (and a half) Orcs, squashed, pinned and/or crushed by the Ent’s wrath

Leaflock is one of my absolute favourite Ent designs, so I was delighted to see him featured in some really fun action moments in The Two Towers. Twenty years on, I cannot overstate how excited I am to see him finally making his collectible statue debut, re-enacting some of those moments!

DESIGNING THE ENTS

Over twenty years ago, Wētā Workshop’s design crew set about researching the world of Middle-earth for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. it may seem hard to believe now, but back then the team were limited to browsing through libraries and local bookstores, photocopying any relevant art they found.

As a starting point, the team created physical image boards containing pictures of all the existing artwork they could locate of various Middle-earth creatures, characters, and environments.

Director Peter Jackson would cast his eye across the assorted collection, finding inspiration to steer our artists in the right direction. However, when it came to Ents, none of the depictions they found could hit the mark.

As Concept Artist Daniel Falconer put it, many were either “too human looking, or just celery sticks with legs.” None matched the tone the director had in mind for his film.

Daniel, being a long-time Ent fan, relished the chance to take a fresh look at these gentle forest folk. Being only a rough sketch, it came as surprise then when Peter took a liking to his first drawing and soon the whole team was experimenting with and refining Daniel’s idea.

Collaborating with Wētā Sculptor Jamie Beswarick, a solid framework for what the Ents would look like was created with sculpted maquettes, and the team began exploring how far they could push the design. Just like the various species of trees, so too were the Ents diverse in appearance; none a greater example of this than that of Treebeard and the Ent that would eventually be called Leaflock: one thin and tall, the other short yet rotund.

And so it was, the Ents were born. From that humble sketch, the design team was delighted to see the giants of nature brought to life, smashing orcs together on the big screen.

Principal Sculptor : Zhaohui Gong

Bringing to life our sentient tree folk required an acute level of attention to detail and an ability to craft organic textures with depth and emotion. That being the case, we turned to the expert skills of Wētā Workshop sculptor Zhaohui Gong.

"Leaflock is a character with great strength and presence; I honed in on many of the small details to try and bring that across. Intricate detailing is a favourite of mine when it comes to sculpting, so crafting the cracks and creases that make up the fierce gaze upon his brow was a particular focus of mine.”

“I was lucky to have been able to collaborate with Wētā veteran Jamie Beswarick on this sculpt. Jamie provided me with a base armature for Leaflock and created a strong foundation from which to build; his mastery of the craft allowed me to take everything to that next level. Utilizing the intricate patterns found in nature, the base for the texturing was created by pressing real bark into melted clay, which I was then able to adjust and touch-up as needed.”
