The Arthas statue was unveiled by Michael Fong, Regional Managing Director & Vice President of Publishing for Asia and Phillip Hillenbrand, Jr., Director of Production, Animation & Development at Blizzard Entertainment, and Lin Chia-Lung, the mayor of Taichung City. Designed by Taiwanese artist Steven Wang, the statue represents how important fantasy and fun are to Blizzard Entertainment and the gaming community in Taiwan and across Asia.

The Asian gaming market has been a key part of Blizzard Entertainment’s success throughout its 25-year history, and the company chose central Taiwan as the location for its only bronze statue in Asia because of the city’s blooming international tourism and accessibility. The company worked closely with the government of Taichung to help create a cultural landmark that would serve as a unique destination for residents and visitors.

“We are thrilled to see the unveiling of the Arthas statue, and we appreciate this unique opportunity to bring an element of fantasy to the city of Taichung,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “The Arthas statue doesn’t just celebrate Blizzard’s 25th birthday-it also shows our appreciation to the community of gamers in Taiwan and across Asia.”

Taichung has established a reputation as a city known for its natural environments and rich cultural history. “We believe that the statue of Arthas will bring a new surge of tourists and become a popular destination for visiting gamers from all around the world. Meanwhile, the unique, vibrant culture of Taichung will offer every visitor remarkable memories,” said Lin Chia-Lung, mayor of Taichung City.

Giant Arthas Statue Unveiled in Taichung, Taiwan
Arthas is one of Blizzard’s most popular characters and a central figure in Warcraft lore. The bronze statue stands 3.2 meters tall, with a length of 4.6 meters, a width of 2.1 meters, and weighs in at 1,814 kilograms. It took designer Steve Wang over a year to plan and create the statue.

Steve Wang (Sun-Jie Wang) is a Hollywood makeup artist and filmmaker who was born in Taipei, Taiwan and moved to the United States when he was nine. While his work keeps him grounded in Hollywood, this collaboration with Blizzard Entertainment brought Wang back to his hometown. His technique and the attention to detail in his artistic design bring Arthas to life, delivering an awe-inspiring presence to the Calligraphy Greenway of Taichung.

According to Steve Wang, this artwork meant a lot to him, but he was inspired by the challenge. It was a big project that took 30 people and over 1,000 hours (over nine months) to complete. “I left Taiwan as a child, but 40 years later, I now have the opportunity to bring this statue back home-this has been quite an emotional and heartfelt experience, because it seems like destiny.” said Steve Wang.

Taichung Expects New Surge of Tourists
This collaboration between Taichung and Blizzard Entertainment presents a great opportunity for the global gaming community to learn about the city of Taichung, and in turn, draw more international tourism to the city.
