Found some work in Progress photos of the SideShow T.rex I sculpted in 2008.  

I first did some sketchbook doodles to figure out a pose  Then I modeled it in CG.  

The next step was to take the file and have it 3D printed out in STARCH.  

3D printing was still not great and could not capture details very well.  

The starch was so crumbly that I had to douse it in crazy glue to make it strong.  

Then I added the clay, in this case P40 chavant and sculpted the details.  

SideShow then cast the model and Anthony Mestas came up with the paint job!  

It was a fun project, and it was my first use of 3D printing too.

We all know that dinosaurs roamed the Earth thousands of years ago, but with limited fossils and constant new discoveries, scientists are still working to figure out just what these creatures really looked like. For the artists behind Sideshow’s Dinosauria, lots of research went into making the T-Rex a truly authentic representation of current science and scientific imagination. Luckily, Sideshow’s lead painter Anthony Mestas happens to be a BIG fan of dinosaurs and had a great time figuring out how best to capture the magic of the ‘Tyrant King’ in the Tyrannosaurus Rex Maquette
