This is the 'Coasts' ep 1 of 5 that will be streaming one a day on Apple TV Plus. Here we go!

Like all eps, Coasts was years in preparation and a huge team are behind its completion. I'll mostly be tweeting about science and not ppl but I will be mentioning some key individuals.

The ep starts with a swimming T-rex. T-rex lived north to South  east to west, across Laramidia (western N America) and was in near-coast environments in many places. Plus ... like just about ALL animals.. it was surely a great swimmer. We WANTED to show something new, and something in keeping with the natural history bent of this series.

Yes, a big part of Prehistoric Planet is that it was made by the amazing team at the BBC Studios Natural History Unit, the most experienced team in the world when it comes to natural history film-making...

In particular, the stories and ideas in Coasts were devised by my excellent colleague Dr Paul Stewart, an expert on animal behaviour and someone who's filmed amazing animal sequences across the world (including snakes vs iguanas).

Texturing by Anthony Sieben and Groom by Jesus Fernandez

When modelling this little guy I had a fair amount of freedom but essentially grounding him deeply in realism and science, with the invaluable skeletal diagrams of @drskeletaldrawing great concept art from multiple artists including @serpenillus , plus tonnes of research and reference of living animals such as Emus, Monitor Lizards, Ostriches, Cassowarys and many more, supported by the inputs and feedback from consultant Palaeontologists

One of the highlights during the design process of the adult and baby tyrannosaurs was Damien Guimoneau, Anthony Sieben Anelia Asparuhova and I jumping into VR headsets along with the Palaeontologists, experiencing the creatures at their true scale in Virtual reality, and seeing the Palaeontologists awesome reactions to standing beside lifesize Tyrannosaurs

I worked at the front end of the project and can’t wait to watch the full series and final results! Big shout out to all those involved in the series Dan Zelcs, Anelia Asparuhova, Anthony Sieben, Damien Guimoneau, Jesus Fernandez, Alin Bolcas, Gabriel Arnold

Tyrannosaurus Rex swimming - Gaëlle Seguillon

I did those concept art at Jellyfish Pictures for the BBC/Apple TV+ PREHISTORIC PLANET documentary for the COASTS episode. It follows a male Tyrannosaurus Rex and it's younglings swimming accross a shallow sea to reach an Archelons nesting ground. It's a dangerous prospect as they quickly get the attention of a Mosasaur.

The swimming Trex piece also ended up inspiring the promotionnal poster.

The original model was really nice.

I adjusted some proportions and strengthened som features.

The original T.rex model I received.

I did some minor adjustments to it. Mostly around the eyes/horns and lip shape.
