Nightcrawler disguises himself as one of the members of a tour group to enter the White House. To cover the unusual blue color of his skin he wears a long raincoat, a hat, sunglasses, and apllies white make-up (a trick he kept from his days as a circus performer) to cover his face and neck. Later on, during Nightcrawler's actual attack on the president, his disguise come off to reveal his true features for the first time.

Nightcrawler circus posters, concept, and design by Guy H. Dyas, line art by Adrien Van Viersen, color and graphics by Dianne Chadwick. Many original circus posters were created for the film and used as set decoration in the abandoned church to give a glimpse of Nightcrawler's past as a circus performer.

An illustraion by Jean-Francois mignault, depicting Nightcrawler's characteristic hands. This art was created as a guide for the make-up FX department to build the final prosthetics worn by Alan Cumming in the film.

Special effects make-up designer Gordon Smith oversees the apllication of the special blue body paint needed to complete Nightcrawler's look on test subject Matt Granger. Gordon Smith waring Nightcrawler's tail.

 

"Ther's a spring inside the tail harness that gives Nightcrawler's tail six different qualities of movement. It's based on the premise of gravity and movement, so rather than trying to puppet it with strings we let his own body motion manipulate the tail to create a very natural look. Each of the six different armature wires in the tail is machined at a different taper so that it can bend for wrapping around a tree or raise the tail straight up over his head"
